MUSKEGON, MICHIGAN - In a battle between Eastern Conference foes, the Muskegon Lumberjacks came away with a 3-1 victory Wednesday over the Chicago Steel at L.C. Walker Arena. Muskegon (27-21-1-1, 56 pts.) received goals from Vincent de Mey and each of the Del Gaizo brothers. Keegan Karki made 28 saves for the Lumberjacks.
Justin Robbins stopped 41 shots for the Steel (22-22-1-4, 49 pts.) and Nick Abruzzese scored the team's lone goal.
Muskegon opened the scoring 12:03 into the game when a shot from just inside the zone was knocked down by Robbins, but de Mey slid a rebound shot past his left pad for a 1-0 lead.
Defenseman Marc Del Gaizo doubled the Muskegon advantage 6:53 into the second period when his power play wrist shot from the top of the left circle found its way through traffic and over the blocker.
USHL leading scorer Anthony Del Gaizo (36-23-59) added to the Muskegon lead at the 8:16 mark of the third period with a top-shelf, glove-side wrister.
Chicago ended Karki's shutout bid with 7:32 remaining thanks to a power-play tally from Abruzzese, his seventh goal of the season. Steel defenseman Derek Daschke found Abruzzese alone in front of the net. The University of Vermont commit deposited a backhanded shot through the five-hole for Chicago's only goal of the night.
The Steel finished one-for-eight on the power play and two-for-three on the penalty kill. The game marked the last of seven regular season meetings between the two teams.
Chicago returns home Saturday, March 17, and Sunday, March 18, for a weekend set against the Tri-City Storm. March 17 features a Salute to Heroes, honoring first responders.
