St. Louis Steamers News Release
Regular Season Ends on High Note: The St. Louis Steamers ended the regular season by winning their scheduled finale, 8-3 against their Semi-Final opponent, the Chicago Storm. The Steamers finished with a two game winning streak and with 23 wins against 7 losses, tops in the league. No other team finished with more than 17 wins. They also won their final game in Savvis Center making their final home record 14-1 in front of 9,487 fans, their largest crowd of the season.
Steamers in the Playoffs: The Steamers now will prepare to take on the Chicago Storm in the opening round of the Major Indoor Soccer League Championship Series. Last season, St. Louis was eliminated in the semi-final round by the eventual champions, the Milwaukee Wave, in two games. Game one will take place at Chicago UIC Pavilion on April 15th at 6:00 pm. Game two will take place at Savvis Center beginning at 7:05 pm. The Steamers finished 5-1 against their Semi-Final round opponent in the regular season and hope that success will carry over in the post-season to an MISL Championship.
All Over the Leader Board: By finishing with far and away the best record in the regular season, the Steamers are also a dominant force when it comes to the final statistics for the season. Besides having the best record, St. Louis also finished tops in team goal scored (199, 6.63 goals per game) and the least goals allowed (139, 4.63 gpg). Carlos "Chile" Farias finished fourth in total points with Jamar Beasley coming in sixth. Farias also was tops in the MISL in assists finishing just one assist ahead of runner-up, Milwaukee's Greg Howes. Beasley finished fourth in goals (33) and tied for second in power play goals (7). Midfielder Mariano Bollella tied with Baltimore's Giuliano Celenza with 5 game-winning goals. Goalkeeper Brett Phillips led the league in several categories including wins (20), losses (4) and goals against average (4.65).
Chile Farias Earns His Second Individual Honor this Season: Carlos "Chile" Farias was announced as the MISL Offensive Player of the Week following his two goal, four point performance in the team's 8-3 win over the Chicago Storm. Farias's night also garnered two assists which placed him as the assist champion for the 2005-06 season. This was the second time this season he was awarded with the honor. Farias also was given the award on Jan. 30th.
Brett Phillips Takes Home Second Monthly Honor: For the second time this season, the Steamers' goalkeeper Brett Phillips was awarded with the MISL Goalkeeper of the Month. Phillips was given the honor following his two wins in as many games and a combined 24 saves in 31 shots faced against the Wave (April 1st) and Storm (April 8th). Phillips also won the award for the month of February for his 4-0 record.
