St. Louis Steamers News Release
Martinez Stays on a Roll and Gathers More Hardware:
Steamers Defender Genoni Martinez has arguably been the hottest player in the MISL lately. His four goals and an assist in the 8-6 victory over the Philadelphia KiXX Saturday night earned him the MISL Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season. He was also named the MISL Defensive Player of the Month for January. His performance Saturday night included 2 power play goals and the game-winning goal. He kept on rolling in the 9-7 win over the Baltimore Blast Monday afternoon by scoring 2 more goals and adding another assist to go along with a block as well. We may be saying he's the Defensive Player of the Week again this time next week after his performance yesterday.
Shaun David Returns to Form:
At the beginning of the 2005-06 season, Shaun David was enjoying a good start to the season which earned him a birth in the MISL All-Star game. But when the calendar turned to 2006, David hit a scoring drought. Starting Jan 7th, David didn't score a goal for 8 consecutive games and only recorded 4 assists during that stretch. Since then, he scored 1 against Milwaukee (Feb 12th), 2 at Philadelphia (Feb. 18th) and a hat trick versus Baltimore (Feb. 20th). Plus he added a goal in the All-Star game Feb. 11th. The All-Star goal was assisted by Steamer teammate and goalkeeper Brett Phillips.
Reiniger is Closing in on Milestone:
The elusive 600 goal mark keeps eluding Joe Reiniger. The Collinsville, IL native is nearing in on 600 career professional indoor soccer goals for a career. He is currently at 598 indoor goals. Being from the St. Louis area, he would like to be able to do it at home. His teammates continue to try and set him up to reach this feat but he's just coming up short. He had 4 shots in the game Saturday night in Philadelphia and added another 3 in the win over Baltimore. His next chance will have to wait until March 3rd when the Steamers travel to California to take on the Cougars in Stockton Arena.
Steamers Bring International Flavor:
The St. Louis Steamers definitely bring an international flavor every time they take the field. The players that make up the current active roster are representatives from eight different nations. Members of the Steamers hail from the United States (13 players), Macedonia (1), Canada (1), Bosnia (1), Mexico (1), Argentina (1), Chile (1) and Cuba (1). That doesn't include the coaching staff. Assistant coach Emil Dragicevic also calls Bosnia home and Head Coach Omid Namazi, although born in the United States, lived in Iran for much of his childhood. In the Steamers' front office, President Zoran Savic is form Serbia, but he has lived much of his life in the U.S.
The Week Ahead:
After a successful two game holiday weekend, the Steamers have their largest off-time of the season. St. Louis does not play this week and doesn't take to the field again until March 3rd @ California Cougars. This weekend will be the first and only weekend on the season in which they are not in action.
