St. Louis Steamers News Release
ST. LOUIS - Yesterday afternoon while the St. Louis Steamers were preparing to play the Baltimore Blast at Savvis Center, the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) awarded Steamers defender Genoni Martinez with the Defensive Player of the Week Award for the second time this season. The last time Martinez was awarded this honor was Jan. 9th. He was also named the Defensive Player of the Month for the month of January on Jan. 30th.
Martinez earned the award with a 4 goal 1 assist performance in an 8-6 victory Saturday night against the Philadelphia KiXX at Wachovia Spectrum. Martinez scored the first goal for the Steamers at the 12:51 mark of the 1st quarter off of a restart from "Chile" Farias. He later set up Farias in the 2nd quarter to give the Steamers a 4-2 lead and the Steamers would never trail the rest of the way. His final three goals all came in the 2nd half including a power play goal on a penalty kick in the 3rd. His 4th goal, another power play goal, came at the 12:34 mark of the final quarter and proved to be the game winner, his 1st on the year. His 2 power play goals give him 4 on the season which is tops on the team.
He continued his scorching play on Monday afternoon is the Steamers' 9-7 win over the Baltimore Blast. Again, he was the first to score for St. Louis and added a second goal in the second quarter. He also added an assist in the second quarter when he set up Jamar Beasley off of a restart. Beasley's goal was the first of 5 unanswered goals in the second quarter. He also added a block Monday afternoon.
Martinez, a two-time MISL Defender of the Year who was an All-MISL First Team honoree with Cleveland last season, is having a phenomenal first season in St. Louis. He's part of a defense that allowed 4.5 goals per game, in a League where no other unit is yielding less than 5.1 coming into Monday's game. He has four restart goals and four power play goals. On February 11, Martinez served as the captain of the Mexican All-Star Team that played before a capacity crowd at Milwaukee's U.S. Cellular Arena for the MISL All-Star Game. The 5-foot-9, 191-pound defender will celebrate his 31st birthday on Wednesday.
Chicago Storm goalkeeper Danny Waltman won the Goalkeeper of the Week Award and Baltimore's Adauto Neto took home the Offensive Player of the Week.
