June 24, 2018 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Edenton Steamers News Release

Rich Ciufo's infield single in the top of the ninth inning gave the Steamers the 3-2 win on Saturday night on the road against the Martinsville Mustangs.

Ciufo hit a high-hopper with two outs up the middle with Devon Gardner on base. Martinsville's Joe Boyle snagged a tough play, trying to throw across his body. But, Ciufo, who was flying down the line, slid head-first into the bag.

During all of this, no one was paying attention to Gardner, who began Ciufo's at-bat at second base. Once Boyle made the throw to first, Gardner sped home for the winning run.

The win extends Edenton's streak to three straight, bringing the overall record to 8-10. Martinsville dropped to 9-12.

Zane Harris once more led the way with a two-run double in the third inning. His hit streak is now at six games.

Jake Miller started for the Steamers and tossed seven tough innings, fanning seven hitters with two runs allowed. Troy Maslowski picked up his first win in one shutout frame.

Ben Anderson got the save, tossing the final inning.

With Ciufo's hit, he has now reached on a base hit in eight consecutive contests. Gardner picked up two doubles and is also on an eight-game hitting streak.

TJ Wegmann and Bryson Worrell also helped with two hits apiece.

Edenton plays a doubleheader on Sunday at home against the Morehead City Marlins scheduled for a 6 p.m. start.
