Steamers to Host Milwaukee

February 10, 2006 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2)
St. Louis Steamers News Release

ST. LOUIS - Sunday afternoon at 2:35 pm inside Savvis Center, the St. Louis Steamers (13-4) will take on the defending MISL champions, the Milwaukee Wave (13-4). At stake is sole possession of first place in the MILS standings for the season. Each team has beaten the other once, so the winner will also hold a tiebreaker for seeding in the MISL playoffs in April.

This will be the first time this season they meet in Savvis Center, where the Steamers are a perfect 8-0. Both other match ups took place in Milwaukee's U.S. Cellular Arena. In their first game (Dec. 3rd), the Wave won 6-5 in overtime on a goal by forward Todd Dusosky. The Steamers held a lead in much of the game only to see Milwaukee score the tying goal with one second remaining in regulation.

In their last contest (Jan. 13th), the Steamers came away with a 10-4 win thanks to a Steamers defense that only allowed eight shots on goal for goalkeeper Brett Phillips. Jamar Beasley and Sterling Wescott each scored two goals for St. Louis. Phillips comes into this game on a roll after posting a shutout in the Steamers' last game, a 4-0 victory over the Chicago Storm on Feb. 4th.

After Sunday, the MISL will have only one team at the top of the standings, making this game the marquee match up on the weekend schedule. Both teams will have a few tired players and coaches as the MISL will hold their All-Star game tomorrow night in Milwaukee. Steamers Head Coach Omid Namazi and Wave Head Coach Keith Tozer are serving as co-coaches of the MISL All-Stars Saturday night, then they meet on opposite benches the following afternoon. Milwaukee is sending 5 members to the All-Star game while the Steamers are sending 4. St. Louis defender Genoni Martinez is also participating, but as a member of the Mexican Federation's National Futbal Rapido team.
