California Cougars News Release

Stockton, CA - Starting with a win on the road last weekend, the Major Indoor Soccer League's (MISL) California Cougars continued their streak, winning their third game over the Chicago Storm 5-3 at Stockton Arena. (SEE ATTACHED BOX SCORES.)

With the memory of the Cougars' home field overtime victory over the Storm still resting on their minds, the Storm defense was at their best and did not allow the Cougars to score in the first quarter. Despite several big saves by Cougars goalkeeper Jim Larkin, the Storm's Mark Ughy put up the first score of the night at 11:15 in the first quarter from an assist by Awadalla Morad.

Penalties dominated the Cougars game in the second quarter and opened the door for the Storm's Mark Ughy to score his second goal of the night, once again, off of an assist by Awadalla Morad at 5:56 in the second quarter. The Storm's Semir Mesanovich got past the Cougars defense to score off of an assist from Novi to end a disappointing first half for the Cougars-3-0.

A different California Cougars team took the field in the second half, dominating the game with five unanswered goals to claim the win. The Cougars formidable Vicente Figueroa scored the first goal of the second half at 6:11 in the third, off of an assist from John Ball. The Cougars Bernie Lilavois returned with a goal at 13:23 in the third quarter off of an assist by Craig Scheer-his 401st career goal.

The Cougars Vicente Figueroa made a promising return in the fourth period with a score at 6:44 in the quarter. He was followed by Cougars scores from Gary Brooks with an assist by John Ball. The Cougars John Ball scored the final goal of the night to bring the 2,389 fans at Stockton Arena to their feet. This was the second meeting between the two teams in Stockton, ending in victory for the Cougars.

"It's my job to get the team to respond to my game plan," said California Cougars Head Coach Troy Dayak. "In the second half we focused on our game instead of worrying about everybody else. I'm really proud of them."

The California Cougars professional indoor soccer team plays its next home game at the beautiful, state-of-the-art downtown Stockton Arena, 248 W. Fremont Street, on Friday, February 17, at 7:30 p.m. PST. The Cougars will play the following home game on Monday, February 20, at 4:00 p.m. PST.
