Steamers Tipped by Morehead City

July 17, 2018 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Edenton Steamers News Release

The Edenton Steamers fell to the Morehead City Marlins 6-2 on Monday night at Big Rock Stadium.

The loss pushed the Clams' second half record to 4-7 and the win gave Morehead City a .500 closing half record at 5-5.

Anthony Jefferson clocked a season-best three hits from the seventh spot in the lineup, but was unable to score. Jefferson's under-the-radar season continues with his on-base percentage increasing to .398, which leads the Edenton team.

The Clams struck first in the opening frame thanks to a groundball hit by Zane Harris to score Tyler Jones. The RBI was Harris' 24th of the summer to tie Anthony Warneke for the most on the Steamers.

The Marlins, however, answered with two in the home half of the first and one more in the third on a solo shot by Joe Mason.

Edenton could only string one more run together in the fourth inning, another RBI grounder, but this time chopped off the bat of Warneke.

Morehead City put the nail in the coffin in the seventh. The first six batters reached base via three walks, two singles and one hit by pitch and the Steamers could never come back.

Zach Keenan jumped to 3-0 this season, earning the victory as the Marlins' starter. He surrendered two runs on seven hits and no walks in 5.2 innings with three strikeouts.

His three replacements, Zach Vennaro, Octavio Mirabal and Evan Lumbert did not hand over a single run out of the bullpen.

Nate Gardner got the loss after allowing three runs in four frames. Kyle Shimp also gave up two runs without recording an out.

On offense, Brendan Dougherty and Joe Mason contributed two hits and one RBI each for Morehead City.

Alongside Jefferson, Tyler Jones had the only other multi-hit game for the visiting Clams.

Edenton returns to play on Wednesday night at home against the Peninsula Pilots.
