March 18, 2004 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2)
St. Louis Steamers News Release

(St. Louis, March 18, 2004) -- The St. Louis Steamers host the MISL Central Division rival Kansas City Comets March 19 at 7:35 p.m. at The Family Arena. The Steamers lost 8-3 to Dallas March 17 at The Family Arena; however, the team gained a game in the standings when the MISL today announced disciplinary sanctions against Monterrey for the use of ineligible players in four of the Fury's victories earlier this season. One of those Monterrey wins was a 6-3 victory over the Steamers on Feb. 12. As a result of its forfeit victory, St. Louis now has a record of 12-17. The Steamers trail San Diego (13-18) by percentage points in the race for the sixth and final MISL playoff berth entering Thursday night's game between the San Diego Sockers and the Monterrey Fury. San Diego defeated Monterrey 7-6 March 17 in the first of back-to-back matchups between the MISL Western Division clubs.

The St. Louis-Kansas City game March 19 is the sixth and final meeting between the intrastate rivals. The Steamers have won three of the five games thus far this season, including a 5-3 triumph on Feb. 20 in Kansas City in the most recent matchup. Although Kansas City has scored the second-most goals in the MISL this season (197), the Steamers have outscored the Comets 36-26 in the season series. Kansas City (15-17) leads St. Louis by 1.5 games in the standings. The Comets roster features St. Louis natives Jeff Davis (CBC High School) and Brian Soell (Oakville High School), and former Steamers Jason Cole (Saint Louis University) and Craig Scheer (Cape Girardeau Central High).

On March 20, the Steamers travel to Philadelphia to take on the KiXX (18-12). The 6:05 p.m. game at the Wachovia Spectrum concludes the season series between the Steamers and KiXX. St. Louis has won two of the three meetings between the teams this season, including an 8-3 victory Feb. 21 at The Family Arena. St. Louis native Joel Shanker (Parkway Central High School) is one of the top players on the Philadelphia roster and enters weekend play second on the team in goals (21).
