MISL Hands Down Disciplinary Sanctions Against Monterrey
March 18, 2004 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2) News Release
(Westport, Conn., March 18, 2004) - The Major Indoor Soccer League announced today it has handed down disciplinary sanctions against the Monterrey Fury for violating MISL regulations by using ineligible players in an official League match, according to Steve Ryan, MISL Commissioner. The disciplinary sanctions to the Fury include the forfeiture of four (4) MISL matches for using three (3) ineligible players, forward Renato Candido Pereira, defender Alejandro Cardenas, and goalkeeper Aurelio Portes Perez, in those contests.
In accordance with MISL regulations and FIFA Disciplinary Guidelines, the forfeited games will be reflected in the overall regular season MISL standings. The four games forfeited by Monterrey include: a 7-6 overtime victory in Philadelphia on January 24; a 5-3 victory in Cleveland on February 6; a 6-3 victory in St. Louis on February 12; and a 5-4 overtime victory versus Cleveland on March 7. As a result, Monterrey's official League win-loss record stands at 5-24, while Philadelphia is 18-12, St. Louis is 12-17, and Cleveland is 12-19. The individual player statistics for those four games will stand as documented upon the conclusion of each game.
In addition to the forfeits, the Monterrey Fury has been fined an undisclosed amount and Fury Management will incur further disciplinary actions handed down by the Commissioner.
"It's unfortunate that we need to impose such measures," stated Ryan. "We appreciate the implications that this decision might have on the MISL's playoff seeding, but in the best interests of our game, the League cannot and will not condone such a violation of policies. The MISL will protect the integrity of its regulations to ensure an equitable field of competition for its member clubs."
