Edenton Steamers News Release
EDENTON, N.C. - The Edenton Steamers announce today the hiring of former Steamer player Kevin Whitehead as their new General Manager for the upcoming 2014 season.
Whitehead, a Tacoma, W.A. native and 2012 graduate of Texas Tech University, begins his first season in a front-office capacity after logging four years as a catcher for the Red Raiders (2009-2012). A business major while at TTU, Whitehead also suited up for the Steamers during the 2011 summer and brings with him to Edenton significant familiarity with the Steamers organization and the CPL as a whole.
"The Board of Directors is very pleased that Kevin Whitehead has accepted our offer to return to the Edenton Steamers as our General Manager," said President Allen Fredd. "Kevin brings to his new position the unique perspective (of) having played for the Steamers, is acquainted with our organization, as well as our community and we look forward to Kevin's leadership as we strive to continue our success in the upcoming season."
As a player for the Red Raiders, Whitehead played in 116 games (84 starts) over his four-year career. He finished with a .386 slugging average, a .381 on-base percentage and threw out 31% of would-be base-stealers. While playing for the Teal and Black, Whitehead was a key member of the record-setting 2011 club that won both first and second-half North Division titles and went all the way to the Petitt Cup Championship series. As a Clam, Whitehead played in 34 games (32 starts). He was hit by a pitch 11 times, and committed only two errors in 258 chances for a .992 fielding average, including throwing out ten would-be base stealers; the hit-by-pitch figure tied a single-season team record that still stands.
"It is great to be back in Edenton, one of the most supportive and unique baseball atmospheres in all of the CPL and summer collegiate baseball," stated Whitehead. "I am honored to have the opportunity to run the day-to-day operations for an organization with such a great history. This year we are looking forward to a great summer during the 75th year of baseball at Hicks Field and we hope to see everyone out at the games to enjoy great baseball and a great atmosphere."
The Edenton Steamers are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 17th season in 2013, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts.
Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,000 alumni drafted and 63 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander -make their Major League debut thus far.
