Steamers Drop Doubleheader to Peninsula

June 29, 2018 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Edenton Steamers News Release

The Peninsula Pilots swept the Steamers in a twinbill on Thursday night at War Memorial Stadium, coming out on top 3-0 and 4-3 in two seven-inning contests.

The Pilots punched their ticket to the 2018 playoffs after the first win to clinch the North division in the first half. The Steamers' record fell to 10-13 while the Pilots' improved to 15-8.

Game 1

Nate Gardner started for Edenton in the opening match-up and did not allow his first hit until the fifth inning. He was pulled in the sixth after allowing an infield single and walking the next batter on a controversial call.

RD Lutze came in relief and surrendered a two-run double off the bat of Jack Strunc on the first pitch he threw. That was all Peninsula needed for the victory, giving Gardner the loss.

Anthony Warneke remained hot at the plate, picking up two more base hits from the second spot in the lineup. Ben Whetstone added two more singles for the Clams.

Game 2

Jake Miller started on the Steamers' side and once more, Edenton had one bad inning that came back to bite them. After scoring three runs in the third to take a 3-0 lead, Peninsula strung together three hits, a sacrifice bunt, an error and a hit by pitch to snag a one-run lead. Neither team scored for the rest of the night. Miller's loss dropped him to 2-2 this season.

Dalton Dedas continued to kill the Steamers, going 3-for-3 with one RBI. Dedas now has 11 RBI this summer and 10 of them are against Edenton.

Tucker Maxwell helped out, going 1-for-1 with one RBI, a walk and a sacrifice.

For the Steamers, Rich Ciufo smashed two doubles and worked a pair of walks. Whetstone walked two times as well, including once with the bases jacked. Bryson Worrell and Zane Harris also contributed with a run driven in each.

Holden Drake looked strong out of the bullpen, tossing two shutout innings with a strikeout. Ryan Scharf tossed the final frame and got one strikeout as well.

The Steamers return tomorrow night for another doubleheader on the road. They are set to play Morehead City beginning at 6 p.m.
