St. Louis Steamers News Release

ERRECALDE SPARKS STEAMERS OVER SOCKERS 4-3 New acquisition Fernando "Tati" Errecalde – who signed with St. Louis March 11 – scored two goals as the Steamers rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat San Diego 4-3 March 14 at the San Diego Sports Arena. With the victory, St. Louis (11-17) moved to within percentage points of San Diego (12-18) in the race for the sixth and final MISL playoff berth. Dallas won the two previous meetings between the teams this season: 5-2 Nov. 22 in St. Louis, and 8-3 Nov. 29 in Dallas. Following the March 17 game, the Steamers and Sidekicks play one more time this season: April 3 in Dallas.

On March 19, the Steamers host the Kansas City Comets at 7:35 p.m. at The Family Arena. The game is the sixth and final matchup between the intrastate and MISL Central Division rivals this season. The Steamers have won three of the five games thus far this season, including a 5-3 triumph on Feb. 20 in Kansas City in the most recent matchup. Although Kansas City has scored the second-most goals in the MISL this season (197), the Steamers have outscored the Comets 36-26 in the season series. Kansas City (15-17) leads St. Louis (11-17) by two games in the standings. The Comets roster features St. Louis natives Jeff Davis and Brian Soell, and former Steamers Jason Cole (Saint Louis University) and Craig Scheer (Cape Girardeau Central High School).

The March 20 game at Philadelphia's Wachovia Spectrum concludes the season series between the Steamers and KiXX. St. Louis has won two of the three meetings between the teams this season, including an 8-3 victory Feb. 21 at The Family Arena. Steamers sign Dynamic Duo from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville The Steamers recently signed two former stars at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) for the critical final month of the 2003-2004 Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) season. Cal Thomas, a senior forward from Rochester, Ill., and Addae Rique, a junior midfielder from Tunapuna, Trinidad & Tobago both were named to the NSCAA/adidas 2003 Division II men's All-America First Team. Thomas and Rique led SIUE to a 16-4-1 record this past fall and to the NCAA Division II regional final, where the Cougars lost 5-2 to then undefeated Truman State University.

Cal Thomas

Thomas, 23, played in 79 games in four seasons at SIUE and completed his collegiate career with 13 goals and six assists as a senior in 2003. The 5-foot-10, 165-pound forward also led SIUE with five game-winning goals this past season. Thomas is a native of Rochester, Ill, just south of Springfield, Ill., and was a team captain and MVP of the Rochester High School state runner-up team his senior year. He also was a member of the Sangamon Starsborn (U-19) 1998 indoor national championship team. He originally enrolled at Indiana University and redshirted one season for the Hoosiers before transferring to SIUE.

Addae Rique

Rique, 25, transferred to SIUE from Missouri Baptist University and took the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) by storm, garnering Player of the Year honors in 2003. Rique, who played high school soccer at St. Augustine in Trinidad & Tobago, led the GLVC in scoring in 2003 with 14 goals and 10 assists. Rique, a 5-9, 160-pound midfielder, had four game-winning goals in 2003 and was second on the team in shots with 61. He elected to forgo his senior season at SIUE to sign with St. Louis.

‘Tati' Returns Fernando "Tati" Errecalde is playing in his second stint with the Steamers, albeit in a different league. In 2001, Errecalde played 16 games with the St. Louis Steamers of the World Indoor Soccer League (WISL), contributing 21 points on seven goals and 14 assists. Errecalde, 5 feet 6, 135 pounds, was one of four players placed on the "protected list" when the Steamers went inactive for the 2002-03 season. Errecalde, 29, is a native of Tandil, Argentina. The veteran midfielder played part of one season (1996-97) with the Toronto Shooting Stars of the NPSL, and three seasons with the NPSL Detroit Rockers (1996-97 through 1998-99). He played youth soccer for the Independiente club team in Buenos Aires from age 14 to 20 and was a member of the 1994-95 Argentine indoor national team. Errecalde recently has been coaching youth soccer in the Detroit area. He also recently signed a contract to play outdoors for the Windsor Border Stars, a new entry in the Canadian Professional Soccer League, which begins play in late May.
