St. Louis Steamers News Release

(St. Louis, Feb. 23, 2004) -- The St. Louis Steamers capped a perfect 3-0 week of play with two "Player of the Week" awards announced today by the MISL: St. Louis forward Steve Butcher, who scored seven goals in the Steamers' three wins Feb. 16, Feb. 20, and Feb. 21, has been named Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending Feb. 22; and goalkeeper Brett Phillips, who was credited with all three victories, has been named Goalkeeper of the Week for the same period.

Butcher, the team's All-Star striker, erupted for seven goals in three Steamers wins last week. In a 6-3 win over San Diego Feb. 16, Butcher scored three goals, including the game-winner. He followed up with two goals (including another game-winner) and an assist as St. Louis beat Kansas City 5-3 on Feb. 20, and registered two more goals in the club's 8-3 win over the Philadelphia KiXX Feb. 21. The 25-year-old has moved into a tie for fifth place on the MISL scoring list with 42 points, and is tied for third with 28 goals (a career high). The native of North Tonawanda, N.Y., was also named the League's Offensive Player of the Week on October 13.

Phillips earns his first weekly award of the season after going 3-0 with a 3.09 goals-against average and .847 save percentage (50 saves on 59 shots) last week. The 36-year-old began his week by saving 14 of the 17 shots he faced in the Steamers' 6-3 win over San Diego Feb. 16. He then saved 16 of 19 shots as the Steamers defeated Kansas City 5-3 Feb. 20, and capped off his week by stopping 22 of 25 shots Feb. 21 in an 8-3 win over Philadelphia. For the season, Phillips is now 10-12 and ranks sixth in the MISL with a 5.24 goals against average. The native of Tampa, Fla., is also fourth in both minutes played (1,235) and saves (304), and sits fifth with a .738 save percentage.

Billy Nelson of the Baltimore Blast was named MISL Defensive Player of the Week.
