Steamers Announce Their Three Organizational Awards

EDENTON, N.C - The Edenton Steamers announce today that Nick Miller, Josh Hampton and Nick Thompson have been honored with the Gieseke Gold Award, the Goodman Glove Award and the Ebersole Heart and Soul Award, respectively, at season's end.

Winner of the Gieseke Gold Award, Miller is a 6-5, 205-pound junior from the University of Northern Colorado in the NCAA Divison I Great West Conference. The Loveland, Colo. native excelled on the mound and at the plate for the teal and black in 2013, finishing with a 5-1 record and a franchise-record 1.02 ERA as a starting pitcher. Miller pitched a team-leading 53.0 innings on the mound and, over the course of his eight starts, allowed 45 hits, 11 runs and only six earned runs. He walked 14 and struck out 25, holding opposing hitters to a .235 batting average against. Miller added two complete games, including a nine-inning shutout of the Wilmington Sharks on the 4th of July that earned him the CPL Rawlings Pitcher of the Week award. For his efforts on the mound, Miller was recognized as an All-Star in 2013. In 32 games at the plate he batted .286 (33-115), scoring 15 runs, slapping six doubles and five home runs. He drove in 19, added 54 total bases and went two-for-two in stolen base attempts. Miller showed the true impact of his versatility by setting another team record with a perfect 1.000 fielding average at first base. Gayle Gieseke passed away unexpectedly in the fall of 2006 and the Steamers created an annual award in her honor. The Gieseke Gold Award is given to the most outstanding player and person at the end of each season.

Hampton, a 5-11, 190-pound redshirt-junior third baseman from Wilmington University (DE) in the NCAA Division II Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, was one of the leading hitters in the CPL. He opened the summer season by earning the CPL Rawlings Hitter of the Week award for week one and continued his hot hitting throughout, also being selected as an All-Star in 2013. He wrapped up the summer batting .313 in 48 games, all at third base. His 42 RBIs led all hitters in the CPL and he led the team and finished fourth in the circuit with 56 hits, and scored 34 runs. Hampton hit 10 doubles, paced the team, and finished tied for the league lead, with four triples and finished tied for second in the CPL with nine home runs. He finished fourth in the league in slugging average at .564 and he went 10 of 12 in stolen bases. Hampton ended his summer in Edenton as one of the top defensive third basemen in league history with a .953 fielding average, 3.62 range factor and routinely made bare-handed plays look easy at the hot corner. At season's end Hampton was awarded the Goodman Glove Award, given to the best Steamer defender throughout the course of the summer. Prior to the 2010 season the Steamers created an annual award in Livy Goodman's honor. The Goodman Glove Award is given to the most outstanding defender each season.

A Chesapeake, V.A. native, Thompson is an infielder/outfielder from East Carolina University in the NCAA Division I Conference USA. He routinely showed his willingness to put the team first by logging time at second base, left field and alternating between leadoff and fifth in the order throughout the summer campaign. Thompson was also one of the most productive bats in the league for Edenton, batting .297 in 46 games for the teal and black and earning an All-Star nod. The 6-1, 195-pounder led the CPL in runs scored with 42 and his 41 walks set a new Steamer standard. Thompson picked up 41 hits, including eight doubles, three triples and nine home runs, which was good for second in the league, tied with his teammate Josh Hampton. He finished atop the leader board in slugging average at .594, second in the league with a .471 OBP and he set a new franchise record with a 1.065 OPS, which was also tops in the CPL. His 39 RBIs were good for third in the league and Thompson added four sacrifice flies, tying him for third in the league. He was awarded the Ebersole Heart and Soul Award at season's end. The Katy Ebersole Heart and Soul Award is given out annually to the player that best exhibits the hard work and passion on the field that Katy exhibited through her many years as president of the Steamers.
