Steamers Add Two More Pieces

May 14, 2014 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Edenton Steamers News Release

EDENTON, N.C. - The Edenton Steamers of the Coastal Plain League announce today the addition of two more pieces to the 2014 summer roster.

We welcome Aaron Wright and Anthony Torres as the newest publicized members of the Teal and Black.

Wright is a junior left-handed hitter who has seen time with UNC-Greensboro this year in the Southern Conference at designated hitter. This came after a stellar 2013 season at JUCO Chattanooga State where he was an all-conference selection at first base. Last summer the Asheville, NC native stayed in state to play his summer ball at Morganton in the Southern Collegiate Baseball League. In 27 games for the Aggies he slashed .313/.415/.588/1.003 with five home runs, which led the SCBL, and 22 RBIs, which was second in the league. Perfect Game CrossChecker rated him with the best power tool in the circuit and Wright left the summer ranked the ninth-best prospect in the league, according to PGC, with the following write-up:

"One of (the) top JC bats in the nation in the spring at Tennessee's Chattanooga State (.358-10-65), continued hot hitting during summer for Aggies (.313-5-22); led SCBL in homers; has big raw pop to all fields from left side with balanced swing; runs OK for player with powerful 6-2/210 frame; began career at UNC-Asheville; has since transferred again to UNC-Greensboro for junior season."Wright is a tremendous left-handed power threat and could be Edenton's leading source of juice from that side of the plate. He has not been able to get on track yet this spring in a limited role at UNC-G and summer ball at the friendly confines of Historic Hicks Field could be a welcome change of scenery. Wright is a solid athlete for his position and plays well around the bag at first base.

Torres is a catcher for the Point Loma Nazarene University Sea Lions of the NCAA Division II PacWest Conference. Torres proved his worth as a backstop last summer in the Southern California Collegiate Baseball League, playing for the Palm Springs Power. In 87 at-bats he produced averages of .322/.404/.402/.806 and did not make a single error in 148 chances behind the plate with only one passed ball, while throwing out 28.6 percent of opposing base-stealers . In addition, he pitched some relief innings for the Power, going 2-0 with a 0.82 ERA in 6 appearances with a .135 batting average against and 16 punchouts to four walks over 11 innings. Torres played his first two seasons with the Division I Iowa Hawkeyes, primarily as a utility man before transferring to Point Loma to be closer to his hometown of Lakeside, CA. Torres slid back into his natural catcher position for the Sea Lions. Torres's real value comes in his almost unheard of versatility: being able to catch, pitch some in relief and even spell at second base, third base or the corner outfield. He has overcome an extremely cold start to the spring and played well in the second half; he will likely see more time on the mound with the Steamers as well. Torres played last summer with previously announced 2014 Steamer second baseman Ryan Raslowsky (Cal State-Northridge).

The Coastal Plain League is the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 18th season in 2014, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. The CPL has had over 1,100 alumni drafted and 65 of those - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut; while another notable alum - Russell Wilson - won Super Bowl XLVIII.
