Stealth take over top spot in poll

April 28, 2004 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release

CHICAGO - The undefeated Wichita Stealth has been voted the No. 1 team in the Week 5 Coaches' Poll, the league office announced today. The Stealth earned 263 of a possible 288 points, including 12 first-place votes, to claim the top spot for the first time.

Behind the Stealth by six points is the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers, who jumped to the No. 2 spot from seventh place last week. The Pioneers garnered 257 points and nine first-place votes. In third place for the second straight week is the Louisville Fire who, like the Pioneers and Stealth, have yet to lose a game this season. The Fire amassed 238 points, including three first-place mentions.

Other teams gaining spots in the Top 12 this week include the Birmingham Steeldogs, Tulsa Talons and Memphis Xplorers. The Steeldogs went from 10th spot to sixth, the Talons moved up one position from 11th to 10th and the Xplorers moved into the Top 12 for the first time this season at 11th place.

This week's schedule features three matchups of teams in the Top 12. The No. 10 Tulsa Talons head to Oklahoma City to face the No. 9 Yard Dawgz on Saturday night at 8:30 p.m. No. 5 Tennessee Valley hosts No. 11 Memphis on Saturday night at 8:30 p.m. and it's a battle of the unbeatens when the No. 2 Pioneers host the No. 3 Fire at Wachovia Arena on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m.

Each week during the season af2 coaches vote for the Top 12 teams in the league by ranking them one through 12 on a ballot. Teams ranked first receive 12 points with the point value decreasing by one for each place below first, meaning a team ranked 12th receives one point. Total points determine the Top 12 list. In the event of a tie in total points, the team with the greater number of first-place votes is ranked higher. The af2 Coaches' Poll is announced every Wednesday during the regular season. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team and the poll results have no bearing on postseason qualification.
