Wichita Stealth News Release

Wichita, Kan. -Even though it is the off-season, the Wichita Stealth staff is still hard at work and Tuesday, October 28th was a big community involvement day for members of the organization. They participated in several community events in hopes of giving back to the community.

On that morning, the Stealth teamed up with the Wichita Eagle for their "Taking It to the Streets" fundraiser. The Stealth mascot "Ace" and several volunteers sold newspapers at the corner of Central and Maize from 6 a.m. until 10 a.m. to help benefit the United Way.

"We are proud to be involved in this campaign to help the United Way," said Stealth General Manager Mike McCoy. "It is a great organization and the people of Wichita really showed their generosity."

At the corner of Central and Maize in west Wichita, the team sold 423 papers and collected $494.15. The team also went above their quota of papers and sold out. Overall, the campaign was a tremendous success for the United Way as they collected $13,297 for the United Way.

Later that afternoon, the Stealth showed their support for a drug-free lifestyle by speaking at Meadowlark Elementary School in Andover, Kansas for their annual Red Ribbon Week celebration. Red Ribbon Week is designed to allow educators, parents, community groups, students, and others to focus on the work being done to stop the spread of drugs and draw attention to the growing millions of youngsters who have pledged to be drug-free.

Stealth Director of Media Relations Deuane Howard spoke to the elementary students at Meadowlark Elementary about the dangers of drugs, making smart choices in life, and how staying drug-free can have a positive impact in their lives.

"This is a great opportunity to get out and speak to the nation's youth about the dangers of drug abuse," said Howard. "If we can influence the students into a positive and successful drug-free life then it benefits the whole nation."

Red Ribbon Week was established to honor Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, a U.S. Drug Enforcement agent who lost his life while investigating a drug gang in Mexico. In 1986, angry citizens in California responded by wearing red ribbons, showing their support in the war against drugs. Red Ribbon Week quickly spread to every state in America. Celebrations now commonly take place during the last week of October.
