Gateway Grizzlies News Release
SAUGET, Ill. - Taso Stathopoulos allowed only two earned runs over six innings and the Gateway Grizzlies salvaged the finale of their series against the Traverse City Beach Bums with an 8-5 win Sunday night at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.
Stathopoulos (1-2) earned his first professional win in the longest outing of his professional career. He also struck out a career-high six batters in his first quality start.
Gateway (26-36) scored eight runs on only five hits - a double and four singles. Grizzlies batters walked 12 times.
Traverse City (30-29) had to use a spot starter after its scheduled starter, Matt Murphy, was unable to pitch.
Brennan Morgan broke the game open with a three-run double down the left-field line with two outs in the fourth inning. Morgan's two-bagger pushed the Grizzlies' lead to 8-3 after they had fallen behind, 3-1, in the third inning on back-to-back Beach Bums home runs.
Grant Black earned his second save in the ninth inning. He struck out two.
Gateway will take Monday off before returning to action Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game series against the Evansville Otters at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.
