Staten Island Yankees News Release

[Staten Island, NY] - A lead off triple Cardinals Jose Virgil and a squeeze bunt by Matt Pagnozzi brought into the go-ahead run as Staten Island fell to the New Jersey Cardinals, 5-4. The Yankees and Cardinals traded runs throughout the day, with the Yankees scoring two of their runs off of wild pitches. New Jersey got on board first in the top of the second on a single by Pagnozzi. Staten Island answered in the third inning when Dave Slevin got on base with an infield single, stole second, advanced to third on one wild pitch and scored on another. The Baby Bombers pulled ahead in the fourth when Hector Zamora scored on an RBI single by Edwar Gonzalez. After New Jersey tied the game in the top of the fourth, the Yankees pulled ahead once more in the sixthon a sacrifice fly by John Urick, plating Bryce Kartler. The Cardinals put up two runs in the top of the seventh for the 4-3 lead before the Yankees knotted the score once again on a wild pitch. A scoreless ninth inning by both teams brought the game into extra innings. Staten Island threatened with two on and two out in the bottom of the tenth, but New Jersey pitcher Roberto Batista got Carlos Rosario to strike out looking to end the game. Mike Gardner was saddled with the loss, his fourth of the season. Batista got the win for the Cardinals, improving to 3-1. The Yankees travel to Niles, OH to play the Mahoning Valley Scrappers from Saturday to Monday. They return home on Tuesday to face the Vermont Expos. Game time is 7:15 p.m.
