Mississippi Braves News Release
GREENVILLE, SC -- After riding a hot streak to finish the first-half of the Southern League season, the Greenville Braves could not continue their winning ways as the first-half champions of the West Huntsville Stars defeated the G-Braves 4-2 Wednesday night at Greenville Municipal Stadium. Stars reliever Ken Ray (1-0) pitched four shutout innings to pick up the win.
Huntsville got the scoring started in the first inning as third baseman Corey Hart jumped into third place in the Southern League RBI standings with a sacrifice fly that plated Chris Barnwell. The Stars would strike again in the fourth inning off of G-Braves starter Chris Waters (2-1) as Hart came in to score on a Noochie Varner fielder's choice. In the sixth inning, the Stars lit up Waters and reliever Roman Colon for two more runs to take a 4-0 lead.
The G-Braves were able to get on the board in the bottom half of the seventh inning as Ramon Castro ripped an RBI double to right to bring in Cory Aldridge. Greenville attempted to mount a rally in the bottom of the ninth inning, loading the bases with one out. Jason Fitzgerald came home on a Bryce Terveen ground out, but Stars closer Matt Childers was able to shut the door and pick up his sixth save with a strike out of J.C. Boscan.
Game Notes
Greenville was once again unkind to Stars center fielder Dave Krynzel as he had his nine-game hitting streak snapped; earlier in the season G-Braves pitching broke Krynzel's 11 game streak...The G-Braves' eight game homestand continues with game two Thursday night at Greenville Municipal Stadium at 7:15...Probable starters are two of the Southern League's leading pitchers in Huntsville left hander Luis Martinez (6-4; 2.33) and Greenville right hander Adam Wainwright (5-3; 2.88)...Thursday is also Gatti-Town Braves Buddies Night and Huntington Learning Center Honor Roll Night.
