Sevierville, Tenn. - The Tennessee Smokies (1-0, 36-35) beat the Jacksonville Suns (0-1, 31-39) behind a strong pitching performance by Rhett Parrott (4-7) who pitched 6 1/3 innings struck out 3 and allowed just one run on 6 hits.
The first Smokies run came in the opening frame when Caonabo Cosme hit his 24th double and later scored on a Bucky Jacobsen single. A two-run opposite field home run by Kevin Burns made the score 3-0 after five innings. The home run was Burns' second of the year.
Tennessee was given three runs in the eighth inning in the Double A debut for Brian Steffek. Steffek walked the bases loaded and his wild pitch pushed across an insurance run for Tennessee. Yadier Molina was hit by a pitch to trigger a benches clearing incident, but no punches were thrown. John Nelson and Skip Schumaker were both walked to force in the final run for Tennessee.
The Suns scored on Parrott in the seventh when Derek Michaelis doubled and scored on a single by Reggie Abercrombie to chase Parrott. Jeremy Lambert pitched the Smokies out of trouble with a pair of strikeouts and the Suns got their final run on a Jason Repko homer in the eighth.
Juan Figueroa struck out three in the ninth to finish and push the Smokies to a win in the first game of the second half. Suns' starter Edwin Jackson (3-5) was tagged with the loss after allowed three runs in five innings.
The Smokies will play the Suns in a 12:00 pm game on Thursday. Jeremy Cummings (6-6, 3.49) will match up with the Suns' Alfredo Gonzales (2-2, 5.81) in the second game of the series.
