Stampede select Brookings native Justin Kirchhevel in Futures Draft

Brookings, SD native Justin Kirchhevel made history today when he was drafted in the fourth round by the Sioux Falls Stampede in the 2005 USHL "Futures Draft." He becomes the first ever South Dakotan drafted by the Stampede and the first South Dakotan drafted in the USHL.
Kirchhevel, a forward, spent last season with the Brooking Rangers where he helped lead the team to their third consecutive South Dakota Amateur Hockey State Championship in March. Kirchhevel finished as the tournaments leading scoring, tallying nine goals in three games.
Kirchhevel, who has participated at the Stampede's tryout camp the past two years, is currently playing midget hockey in Colorado.
"Justin played very well in our tryout camp in June and was very close to being on our roster this year," said Stampede GM/Head Coach Kevin Hartzell. "To my knowledge, Justin is the best player to come out of South Dakota and someone we envision being on our roster next season."
The "Futures Draft" consists of each team selecting four (4) US born athletes and two (2) Canadian born athletes to fill a six man roster in which each team will hold the players rights for one calendar year.

1st Round (# 3 overall): Doug Leaverton-Defenseman (Honey Baked Midget "AAA")
2nd Round (14th overall): Ryan McDonough-Defenseman (Cretin-Derham Hall H.S.)
3rd Round (25th overall): Taylor Mattson-Forward (Holy Angels H.S.)
4th Round (36th overall): Justin Kirchhevel-Forward (Brookings H.S.)
Canadian Born Draft
1st Round (10th overall): Derek Lee-Forward (North Shore Bantam "AAA")
2nd Round (21st overall): Simon Danis' Petin-Forward (Gatineau Midget)
