Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Sioux Falls, SD--The Sioux Falls Stampedes final Friday night game of the season was a tough one as they fell 3-1 to the Sioux City Musketeers at the Arena. Tim O'Brien scored two goals for the Musketeers (29-29-1) who ended the season with six wins against the Stampede. Zac McCarver had the lone goal for Sioux Falls (17-36-6), who have struggled all year long on Friday nights at the Arena. Goaltender Jay Williams turned aside 36 of 39 shots he faced, while Musketeer goaltender Matt Skoff thwarted 25 of 26 Stampede shots.
"It was the same ole', same ole'," said head coach Kevin Hartzell. "We play hard but we don't get the biscuit in the basket."
The Stampede took little time scoring first as forward Zac McCarver connected down the right wing boards with a Dan Carlson pass for his third goal of the year. However, Sioux City responded a little over five minutes later when Tim O'Brien nailed a shot past Williams left side, tying the game at 1-1. The goal was the first for the Musketeers against Williams in seven periods. Williams had posted back-to-back shutouts against Sioux City entering Friday night. The Musketeers almost capitalized on a 2-on-1 with less than a minute left, but they would be unable to take advantage and both teams would go into the locker room tied. There were no penalties in the period, and Williams stopped 10 of 11 shots put on him.
Sioux Falls went on their first power play of the game 1:40 into the second period thanks to a Brett Patterson roughing call, but would come up empty-handed. Sioux City's Maxim Gaudreault broke the tie at 14:34 with a wrist shot from the right side, giving the Musketeers the 2-1 lead. The team from Iowa got another great chance with 2:54 left on an Ed McGovern kneeing penalty, but like the Herd, would not able to score on the advantage. Williams faced 16 shots in the period and blocked 15 of them. Both teams went 0 for 1 on the power play.
The Musketeers' strong play continued into the final period, where Tim O'Brien tallied his second goal of the evening on a pass across the crease from Kyle Criscuolo at 10:57. Sioux Falls would be unable to muster anything offensively the rest of the period and Sioux City went on to the 3-1 victory. Williams prevented 11 of 12 Sioux City shots in the period, and each team ended up 0 for 1 on the man advantage.
"Sioux City played a physical, strong game tonight and it gave us good evaluations of our guys," said coach Hartzell.
The Stampede will end the season Saturday night at the Sioux Falls Arena when they host the Tri-City Storm at 7:05 PM. It is the ever popular "Take My Jersey Night" with all the proceeds benefiting the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Fans can also listen to the game live on KELO-AM 1320 starting at 6:40 PM.
