March 4, 2004 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Sioux Falls, SD--The Sioux Falls Stampede, a member of the United States Hockey League, announced today the formation of the new Jakob L. Beier Stampede Scholarship Award for Courage. This honor will annually provide a $500 scholarship each to one female and one male "senior" playing high school hockey in the state of South Dakota.
To become eligible to win, a student must have played for a South Dakota high school hockey program and have made a significant contribution to his or her local community during their high school career. Judging will be based on academic record, participation in school/community activities and impact on the game of hockey. A letter of recommendation from the local youth hockey association should be included. The scholarship applicants must also pursue studies at an accredited college/university during the 2004 fall semester.
Jakob Beier was a 5-year-old boy who lost his life on December 27, 2003 after an 11-month battle with brain cancer. Jakob's dream was to have played for the Sioux Falls Stampede and eventually one day play for the Detroit Red Wings of the NHL.
"Jakob was the ultimate warrior!" said Jim Loria, Stampede Team President. "He was such a courageous young man who had to battle so many obstacles. His spirit, his love for life and his emotional attachment for the game of hockey and the Stampede deeply touched each of our players and every member of our organization. We thank the Beier family for permitting our club to continue to honor the memory of Jakob who truly was a 'big man' in life".
"We are very excited and can't think of a better way to honor Jakob's memory than by helping young hockey players in our home state pursue their athletic and educational dreams for the future. It was Jakob's dream too to play hockey and he looked up to the Stampede players as great role models. And that is why our family is proud to be associated with the Stampede organization," stated Lance and Lori Beier, parents of Jakob.
The Beier's will be in attendance during the Stampede's final regular season home game on Saturday, March 27th to help present the first-ever Jakob L. Beier Stampede Scholarship Award for Courage.
** Deadline for all scholarship entries is March 22, 2004. Please mail all entries to Jim Loria, Sioux Falls Stampede, 230 South Phillips Ave., Suite 104, Sioux Falls, SD 57104. For more information, please contact: Jim Loria at 605/336-6060 or by e-mail: loria@sfstampede.com
