St. George RoadRunners News Release

(Pleasanton, CA. November 7, 2006) The newly minted St. George Roadrunners of the Golden Baseball League (GBL) hosted their first player tryout as they begin to build their roster for their inaugural season starting next May. Seventy-five players from nineteen states traveled to St. George to participate in the tryout at Bruce Hurst Field on the Dixie State University campus yesterday. Twelve were selected by Manager Cory Snyder and signed to contracts at the conclusion of the event.

"I was very impressed with the level of talent in the group," said Snyder. "The pitching was superb and I'm confident we have a good start on a winning team after today. In addition, the passion and character displayed by these athletes gives me great confidence that this will be a team that the community can be proud of as well."

Of the twelve players selected there were five pitchers, three outfielders, three infielders, and one catcher. The players selected were: RHP Shane Smuin of Salt Lake City, UT; , LHP Robert Hawthorne of San Jose, CA; RHP Eric Brock of Henderson, NV; RHP Kyle Tash of Dillon, MT; RHP Aaron Kalb of Middletown, NJ, C Paul Vargo of Riverside, CA; INF Bryant Perdomo of Kenosha, WI; INF Mark Lewis of Madison, AR; INF Brett Flowers of Huntington Beach, CA; OF Jerry Thornton of Lutz, FL; OF Earl White Jr of Pine Bluff, AR; and OF David Jolliff of El Cajon, CA.

This begins the formation of the 2007 Roadrunner roster that will result in 22 players making the ball club to begin the season in late May and play 90 games through the end of August. A total of 30 players can be signed in the off-season with a spring training roster of 28 that will arrive in St. George, Utah two weeks prior to the season. League rules require the team to carry at least six rookies but, similar to the other GBL teams, the majority of the roster will be made up of minor league professionals with experience from Single-A to Triple-A and a few with major league time as well.
