
Squirrels to Recognize Special Olympics Virginia Athletes

Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
The Richmond Flying Squirrels, Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, have announced they will be holding a special ceremony to send the Special Olympics Virginia athletes off to the 2011 Special Olympics US National Games in Lincoln, NE. The ceremony will take place during pre-game festivities prior to the Flying Squirrels' game Friday, July 16th against the Bowie Baysox.
Team Virginia's 33 representing athletes will be competing in 8 sports alongside the best Special Olympics athletes in the country. The number one female Special Olympics golfer in the world, Grace Ann Braxton, will be representing Team Virginia and will be present at The Diamond on Friday night. The following athletes will also be participating:
* Swimming: Chris Woodrum, Patrick Warren, Heather Boncher, and Jordon Long. Coached by Jim Brinkman and Sara Hameline.
* Powerlifting: Jed Hutchinson and Sean Kimball. Coached by Rob Kelly.
* Bowling: Tracey Caynor, Jennifer Ruley, Matthew Bevins, and Tony Paitsel. Coached by Meg Powell.
* Tennis: Jeff Regan and Taylor Trowbridge. Coached by Davis Toombs.
* Golf: Grace Ann Braxton, Jada Goodson, David Curtin, Harris Fischer and Partner George Fisher, Laurie Anne Kehoe. Coached by Chris Curtin.
* Bocce: Christine Beuchling, Clarence Campbell, Shannon Jackson, and Ian Chambliss. Coached by Ken Massie.
* Track and Field: Matthew Jones, Jason Smith, and Katy Sanchez. Coached by Marjorie Loya.
* Soccer: Andre Wright, Mitchell Basdeo, Casandra Blackwell, Yolanda Hall, Justin Ritvalsky, Joseph Lee, Jr., William Hamilton, and Alfred Robinson. Coached by Matthew Basdeo and Ramnath Basdeo.
"Our number one initiative is community impact and we are thrilled that we can help send the Special Olympic Virginia Athletes off to the US National Games in style," said Community Relations and Promotions Director Christina Shisler. "The athletes have worked very hard for a place in the National Games and it will be a fun celebration here at the ballpark!"
The Flying Squirrels will also be hosting Scout Night on Friday. Participating Boyscouts will be in attendance and some will be able to enjoy a sleepover in the outfield. Gates will open at 6:00 PM for live entertainment from Jonathan Austin and music from No Bounds Band.
