Shreveport Sports righthanded pitcher Thad Markray was sold today to the Kansas City Royals and will be assigned to the Texas League AA Wichita Wranglers. His pitching coach at Wichita is the former Shreveport Captains pitcher Larry Carter, who pitched for the Captains in 1989-91.
Markray, was 8-2 with a 3.05 ERA this season with the Sports and was just recently selected as a Central Baseball League All-Star this past week. He is the fifth player to be signed by an affiliated team this season.
Markray leads the Central League in wins and complete games (4) while second in the league in strikeouts with 87 in 82 2/3 innings of work. He was also the CBL Pitcher of the Week on June 27th after blanking Fort Worth 1-0, in a game that saw him strike out a season high 13 batters.
A native of Springhill, Louisiana, Markray was originally signed as an infielder by the Cincinnati Reds in the third round of the 1997 draft. Last year he pitched at Battle Creek (MI) in the Class A Midwest League in the New York Yankees organization.
He is also the third Shreveport Sports player to be signed by an affiliated team in the two years the Sports have been a member of the Central Baseball League. Third baseman Tony Schifano was signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers at the end of last season and started out this year at AA Jacksonville in the Southern League. Pitcher Robert Averette, who was 13-4 last year with the Sports was recently purchased by the Baltimore Orioles and is now 2-0 with Bowie (MD) in the AA Eastern League.
