Sports have winning streak snapped

Pensacola's Larry Bethea stroked a grand slam home run in the eighth inning to give the Pelicans an 8-4 win over the Shreveport Sports Sunday at Fair Grounds Field. The loss snapped the Sports winning streak at six-games and it also broke the Pensacola six-game losing streak.

The Sports had taken a 2-0 lead in the first inning getting three hits and RBI's by Hector Lebron and Jason Torres.

Pensacola tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth, but the Sports came back and took a 4-2 lead with a couple of runs in the bottom of the fourth.

The Pelicans scored a run in the fifth and tied the game on an RBI double by Jose Salas in the seventh. That set up the winning blow by Bethea which came off losing hurler Dan Mozingo.

Not only was the Sports winning streak broken, but Chad Gambill went hitless in four at bats to break his 17-game hitting streak.

Shreveport and Pensacola will meet in the second game of the three game series Monday. Game time 7:05.
