Spokane Shock News Release
The Spokane Shock continued their winning ways Saturday night and defeated the Milwaukee Iron, 62-48. With the win, Spokane earned its ninth victory of the season (9-2) and Milwaukee (7-5) suffered their first loss at home.
Vengeance was certainly on Spokane's mind as Head Coach Rob Keefe said his team was "embarrassed" in their 62-74 loss to the Iron on Opening Night. But the vengeance might have been even sweeter for DB Travis Williams. After the first game against Milwaukee, Williams heard his share of criticism but in the second match-up against Milwaukee he turned in one of his best performances of the season. Coming into tonight's game, Milwaukee was averaging 66.1 points per contest; but, Williams and the rest of the Shock defense held the Iron's powerful offense to a season-low 48 points.
Spokane jumped out to an early 7-0 lead, courtesy of a 28-yard touchdown reception by WR Raul Vijil. On Milwaukee's ensuing drive, Williams intercepted QB Chris Greisen's second pass of the game and help set up Spokane's second touchdown with a two-yard run by Antwan Marsh. Williams finished the night with four tackles, one interception and two pass break-ups.
Marsh turned in another outstanding performance and recorded an interception of his own early in the second quarter, and returned it 11-yards for his second score of the game. With tonight's interception, Marsh has recorded an interception in every game he has played (3).
Milwaukee was not going to go away quietly and tied the game with 5:56 left in the third quarter on an 27-yard touchdown reception by Milwaukee's leading receiver Nate Forse (10 receptions for 92 yards with two touchdowns). Milwaukee and Spokane continued to exchange touchdowns for most of the quarter until Shock WR Emery Sammons helped break the game wide open.
After Marsh scored his third touchdown of the night in the third quarter, Spokane had a 48-41 lead. On the ensuing kickoff, Spokane's K Taylor Rowan hit the cross bar and after slipping through Milwaukee's hands Sammons recovered the ball in the endzone to put the Shock up for good.
Shock QB Kyle Rowley finished the night with 195 yards and four touchdowns. WR Huey Whittaker led all Shock receivers with seven receptions for 99 yards with two touchdowns.
Spokane returns home next week for a Friday night showdown with the Arizona Rattlers. Tonight, the Rattlers defeated the Jacksonville Sharks, 66-50. In last week's Coaches Poll, Spokane was the top-ranked team in the league while Arizona was second. Tickets for the game are still available and can be purchased by contacting TicketsWest.
