Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release

RICHMOND, VA - The Richmond Flying Squirrels eliminated the Bowie Baysox from playoff contention with a, 4-3, victory in front of 6,569 on Monday afternoon at The Diamond. The final crowd of the season put Richmond's season attendance total at 463,842 for an average of 6,626 fans per opening. Both of those totals were tops in the Eastern League as the Squirrels wrapped up a highly successful inaugural season in Richmond, VA.

Bowie grabbed the early lead with a first-inning run against Squirrels' right-hander Felix Romero. Danny Figueroa sparked the inning with a one-out single. He swiped second base and scored for a 1-0 lead when Joel Guzman singled into left-center field a batter later.

The Baysox extended that lead to 2-0 when Brandon Waring led off the fourth inning with a solo-home run off of Romero.

The Squirrels rallied back and raced past the Baysox in the bottom of the fourth. Brad Boyer led off the inning with a single off of Bowie left-hander Pedro Viola, who had limited Richmond to a lone hit over the first three innings. An out later, Sharlon Schoop doubled down the left-field line to bring him around. Clay Timpner followed with a single and Juan Ciriaco gave Richmond the lead with a two-run double to left-center field. Eliezer Zambrano capped a four-run inning when he doubled to the left-field corner for a 4-2 advantage.

Romero (5-3) finished his final start of the year after five innings. He left with the lead after surrendering a pair of runs on a scattered nine hits. He didn't walk a batter and struck out two to earn his fifth win of the year.

Bowie capped the scoring in the ballgame with a run against right-hander Daryl Maday in the seventh inning, but ultimately stranded nine runners on 13 hits. The Squirrels used Mitch Lively, Maday and Adrian Martin each for an inning of relief to bridge to the ninth inning. Right-hander Rafael Cova worked a perfect ninth inning to claim his league-best 23rd save.

The 2010 season has concluded for the Flying Squirrels. Season tickets for the 2011 season are currently on sale and can be purchased by calling the Squirrels at (804) 358-FUNN (3866).
