Brantford Bulldogs News Release
HAMILTON, ONTARIO. With a 3-2 series lead, the Hamilton Bulldogs entered Game 6 on Monday night at the WFCU Centre in Windsor with a chance to hoist the J. Ross Robertson Cup for the second time in franchise history but the Bulldogs would have to earn it without the services of Seattle Kraken draft pick Ryan Winterton.
Hamilton got off to the start they wanted, pressuring Mathias Onuska's goal and earning a power-play after Lawson Sherk was tackled in the high slot of the Windsor zone. The power- play sputtered however, with the Windsor Spitfires controlling the puck shorthanded, leading to Daniel D'Amico scoring on a shorthanded breakaway at 7:27 of the first period giving Windsor a 1-0 lead. Two massive Marco Costantini stops, including a point blank kick save on Wyatt Johnston, put some jump back into the Bulldogs. With the puck deep in the Windsor zone with just over 4 minutes to play in the period, Avery Hayes stripped a Windsor defenseman, feeding Logan Morrison infront who shelved the puck over Onuska, tying the game 1-1 at 15:54 on his 16th of the post-season. The period came to a close with the Bulldogs gaining momentum heading towards the final 40.
The momentum swung wildly in the second period, with the Bulldogs breaking the tie at 10:46 as Arber Xhekaj's point blast was denied by Onuska but a follow up to an open goal for Logan Morrison gave the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead on Morrison 2nd of the game and 17th of the playoffs.
With the period quickly running out, Windsor found their response, at 18:44 off an offensive zone steal Oliver Peer tossed the puck to the front of the Hamilton goal for Daniel D'Amico who cashed his 2nd of the game tying it 2-2. That goal was followed by an icing on the Bulldogs and off the ensuing draw, Will Cullye won the puck to Wyatt Johnston who fed Michael Renwick for a picture perfect one-timer to give Windsor back the lead, 3-2, at 19:31. With 20 minutes to play, it was on the Bulldogs to counter the Spitfires pushback.
Following a scrum at the end of the second period, the Bulldogs were stunned to find out that they would start the final frame on the penalty kill and the Spitfires cashed in at 0:46 as Will Cuylle tipped a Wyatt Johnston shot into the Hamilton goal giving Windsor a 4-2 lead. The Bulldogs frustration with the officiating would boil over at moments including Gavin White taking a hit from behind from Cuylle in the Hamilton right wing corner that went unpenalized. Despite a furious press to the Windsor goal late, Mathias Onuska kept the door shut and Pasquale Zito on a breakaway at 16:58 put the game out of reach with the Windsor Spitfires winning Game 6 by a 5-2 score and sending the OHL Finals to an all-decisive Game 7.
The Hamilton Bulldogs will return home on Wednesday night, June 15th as they host Game 7 of the J. Ross Robertson Cup Finals with a 7:00pm start time at FirstOntario Centre.
