Spirit Topple Majors' League Leading Defense in 4-2 Victory

(Mississauga, ON) The Saginaw Spirit posted a 4-2 win over the league's top defensive team, the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors, Friday night at the Hershey Centre. The Majors boast the lowest goals against ranking in the league with 128 goals against in 52 games. Jordan Szwarz earned the game's first star honors with the game winning goal and an assist, with rookie Vince Trocheck matching Szwarz's production to earn the game's second star honors. The Spirit, with 55 points and a record of 25-21-4-1, resume their road trip Saturday night with a 7:00 PM match-up against the Erie Otters.

The Spirit opened the game by firing off two straight goals. Defenseman Peter Hermenegildo tallied a goal at the 12:43 mark, courtesy assists from center Barry Sanderson and center Vince Trocheck. Winger Michael Kantor moved the score to 2-0 Saginaw with his third goal of the season at 17:39 in the first, thanks to an assist from winger Jordan Skellett.

The Majors would respond with two consecutive goals however, evening up the contest 2-2 by the middle of the second period. Center Casey Cizikas notched a goal at 18:06 in the first to move the score to 2-1, with winger Devante Smith-Pelly and defenseman Cameron Gaunce assisting. Mississauga evened the contest 2-2 in the second period, with defenseman Blake Parlett scoring a goal at the 13:00 mark from defenseman Brett Flemming and winger Riley Brace.

Saginaw winger Jordan Szwarz (NHL Phoenix Coyotes) would heed the call later in the second, scoring a power play marker at 19:43 to give the Spirit a one goal advantage exiting the period. Center Tyler Murovich and defenseman Jordan Hill tallied the assists on the goal. Trocheck scored the lone goal of the third period, scoring his thirteenth goal of the season from Szwarz and center Michael Sgarbossa to extend Saginaw's lead by two goals.

Spirit goalie Edward Pasquale (NHL Atlanta Thrashers) posted 28 saves on 30 shots, with fellow Thrashers prospect Chris Carrozzi earning 21 saves on 25 shots for the Majors.
