Saginaw Spirit News Release

The Saginaw Spirit welcomed the Windsor Spitfires to the Dow Event Center for some holiday hockey on Saturday night. The game marked the last regular season match up between the teams and the Saginaw Spirit took the 7-4 win over the Windsor Spitfires, with the help of Dylan Sadowy's hat-trick performance and Devon Paliani's two goal achievement.

The Saginaw Spirit and Windsor Spitfires turned in an exciting first period, finishing the first 20 minutes of play tied 2-2. Windsor opened up the scoring off the stick of Daniil Vertiy at 6:18 of the period to put the Spitfires up 1-0 over the Spirit. The lone assist on the play went to Jamie Lewis. The Spirit moved to a power play after Cristiano DiGiacinto headed to the box for crosschecking and the Saginaw power play unit took the ice. Dylan Sadowy tied the score at one with his 17th goal of the season at the 11:49 mark with Jesse Barwell and Greg Di Tomaso on the assists. Windsor's Aaron Luchuk reinstated the Spitfires lead at 15:28 of the period, pulling ahead of the Spirit 2-1. Andrew Burns and Hayden McCool assisted the play. The Spirit tied the Spitfires yet again at 18:26 of the period after Dylan Sadowy fed a pretty pass to Jesse Barwell who put home his 4th goal of the season. Greg Di Tomaso was also credited with an assist on the play. The boys headed to the locker room after the first period tied at 2 with Windsor leading shots on goal 13-10.

Saginaw and Windsor exchanged another two goals throughout the second period, and finished off an intense 20 minutes of play with shots on goal tied at 25. The Spirit pulled ahead of the Spitfires early in the second period off the stick of Devon Paliani, his second goal of the season. Kris Bennett and Connor Brown took the assists on the play. The Spirit cushioned their lead over the Spitfires at the 15:23 mark after Jacob Ringuette picked up a pass fresh out of the box from Nick Moutrey. Ringuette netted Saginaw's fourth goal of the game and his third of the season to go up 4-2 over Windsor. The Spitfires were quick to get back on even terms with the Spirit and took advantage of the extra man on the ice as Saginaw moved to the penalty kill. Windsor's Trevor Murphy cut into Saginaw's lead and made it a 4-3 game at the 16:23 mark with the help of Jamie Lewis and Slater Doggett. Shortly after the Spitfires silenced the Spirit crowd and the team on the ice. Shots on goal were tied at 25 as the teams headed to the dressing room with a score tied at four thanks to Windsor's Sam Povorozniouk.

The Spirit took the reigns 34 seconds into the third period after Paliani lit the lamp and netted his second goal of the night on a pass that was set up by Kris Bennett and Connor Brown. Not even a minute later Sadowy reinstated Saginaw's two-goal lead over Windsor and notched his 18th goal of the season at 1:09 of the period. Michael Holmes had the lone assist on the play. The Spirit moved to the penalty kill and sent Troy Henley to the box for slashing at 15:22 of the period. Windsor's extra man on the ice did not stop Sadowy's outstanding performance as he fired home an unassisted shorthanded goal only seconds into the penalty kill. The Saginaw Spirit finished off the Windsor Spitfires 7-4, with final shots reading Saginaw 38, Windsor 36.

The Saginaw Spirit will see a bit of a holiday break before taking the ice against the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds on Sunday, December 28th at 7:11 p.m. at the Dow Event Center.
