Saginaw, Mich. - The Saginaw Spirit (32-13-0-1) face Barrie Colts (19-24-2-0) in the teams' first meeting this season at the Dow Event Center, on February 3rd.

Last Time:
Saginaw's last game was a 5-3 home loss to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds on the final night of January. Saginaw scored once in the first, then twice early in the second to jump out to a three-nothing lead. Sault Ste. Marie rallied in the second half of the second and third, scoring five unanswered goals in the win. Joey Willis scored two goals for the Spirit and Calem Mangone added a powerplay goal for his 16th of the year. Rodwin Dionicio finished with two assists and Andrew Oke started in net for Saginaw stopping 29 of 34 shots.
Barrie's last game was a 4-2 road victory over the Flint Firebirds last night at the Dort Financial Center. Flint and Barrie both scored in the first and second periods setting up a 2-2 score entering the second intermission. The Colts scored 18:24 into the third then tacked on an empty netter with a second left to seal the game. Cole Beaudoin collected a goal and an assist with Shamar Moses and Thomas Stewart both adding their fifth goals of the season. Riley Patterson scored his 17th and Ben West started for Barrie stopping 31 of 33 in his eighth win of the season.
Last Season:
Saginaw and Barrie met twice last year with the Colts walking away with both victories. The first, a 5-2 in Barrie on December 8th, 2022, saw Anson Thorton stop 45 of 47 shots in the win, aided by a four-point night from Jacbo Frasca (1G, 3A) and a three-point from fellow center Beau Jelsma (1G, 2A). Michael Misa scored his 16th for Saginaw and Hunter Haight finished a one-and-one with Tristian Lennox stopping 21 of 25 shots.
The second matchup, this time at the Dow Event Center, was a 4-1 come-from-behind Barrie win on January 29th, 2023. Saginaw scored late into the first period and held that one-goal lead until halfway through the third. The Colts then scored four straight, including two empty netters, for the 4-1 final. Anson Thorton had another fantastic night against Saginaw stopping 33 of 34 with Jacob Fransca again collecting a multi-point night (1G, 2A) and Brandt Clarke netting a hat-trick. Oliver Savard scored the lone Saginaw goal with Dean Loukusand Joey Willis in on the helpers.
Saginaw is (1-3-1-1) while facing Barrie over the last five years with their one win coming in a 6-3 win at Barrie on February 21st, 2019. The Spirit are 0-2-0-1 at home during that split with the last win over the Colts at home on November 6th, 2016 with Saginaw scoring three times in the final frame to complete a 4-2 win.
Players to Watch
Zayne Parekh continues to dazzle in his draft season collecting a team-leading 66 points, tied for fifth in the OHL, 44 assists, tied for second in the OHL, and 22 goals which tops the defensemen scoring race. Michael Misa reclaimed his team scoring lead this week, notching his 24th goal. Owen Beck's first ten games since being acquired by Saginaw have been productive, producing 16 points (5G, 11A) and going 54.06% while in the faceoff dot. Goaltender Andrew Oke leads the Spirit in all major categories with a 3.09 goals against average, a .889 save percentage (SV%) and 20 wins.
Beau Jelsma leads the Colts in points (48) with 30 also being the team lead in assists. Cole Beaudoin leads the team with 21 goals, including two scored in his last game. Riley Patterson and Shamar Moses have both been productive rookies with Patterson collecting 29 points (17G, 22A) and Moses 21 (5G, 16A). Sam Hillebrandt currently leads Barrie in all major goaltending categories including a 3.46 GAA, a .905 SV%, and 11 wins.
