Spirit Have Record-Breaking Season
September 29, 2004 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
North Shore Spirit News Release
In only their second year of existence, the North Shore Spirit had another successful season under manager John Kennedy. With strong pitching and potent bats, the Spirit broke several team records throughout the 2004 season.
The Spirit finished with 57 wins for the season, six more than last season, and recorded 523 runs as opposed to 423 runs in 2003. Other team records that were broken this season include hits (922), doubles (166), homeruns (84), stolen bases (56) and team batting average (.294).
The team batting average of .294 was the highest in the Northeast League, and the Spirit's team ERA of 4.14 was third in the league behind Bangor and Quebec.
The Spirit hitters and pitchers set quite a few individual records as well. Travis Oglesby hit 18 homeruns for the year, Nelson Teilon had 68 runs scored and Joe Hastings had 66 RBI. Vic Davilla tied last season's record of 116 hits and currently holds the record for 172 total bases in a season.
Davilla was second in the Northeast League in hits and finished fourth in the league in batting with a .330 average. Rob Fisher was right behind him in fifth at .328. Oglesby's 18 homeruns were good for third in the league, Teilon's runs scored were second and Hasting's 66 RBI put him fourth.
Jeremy Sugarman had a Spirit-best winning percentage (100%) with a 10-0 record in 2004. Closer Ryan Bicondoa set two Spirit records; one for saves in a season with 21 and the other for games pitched with 40. Both his saves and his games pitched were also second in the Northeast League. Lastly, Bryan Morse set an individual Spirit record for innings pitched with 137.0, which also led the Northeast League. Morse's 2.50 ERA was second in the league and his six complete games topped all pitchers in league.
The Spirit also had two pitchers, Sugarman and John Kelly, purchased by major league organizations. Sugarman was sold to the Cincinnati Reds on July 30 and transported to Virginia to play for the Potomac Cannons (A-Advanced). Kelly was bought by the Seattle Mariners on August 12 and played for the Triple A Tacoma Rainiers.
The Spirit currently hold the title of Northeast League North Division Champs for the second consecutive year. The entire Spirit organization would like to thank all the fans for their continued support throughout the 2004 season.
