Spirit earn first place tie with 2-1 win over Whalers

The Saginaw Spirit downed division rival the Plymouth Whalers 2-1 in Saginaw on Wednesday night. The game featured a battle between the two likely candidates for the West Division title in the Ontario Hockey league. Powerplay goals were the tale of the night.

Saginaw struck first at 16:01 of the first period, when forward Ryan McDonough flipped in a backhand shot that bounced in off of Whalers netminder Justin Peters (CAR '04). Michal Birner (STL '04) and Patrick McNeill (WAS '05) assisted. Saginaw jumped up 2-1 at 7:54 of the second period, on Jesse Gimblett's backhand shot, on the powerplay. Birner and McNeill assisted again.

The Whalers cut the Spirit lead to 2-1 at 10:25 of the second, when Evan Brophy scored on the 5-on-3 powerplay with a slapshot from the point.

Spirit goalie Francois Thuot had 41 saves on the night. Saginaw's record improves to 35-30-1-0, with 71 points. The Spirit are tied in points for the OHL West Division lead, and currently hold the second seed in the Western Conference playoff race. The Spirit have two games remaining, in Sault Ste. Marie on Friday night and in Plymouth on Saturday night.

Spirit Host Hockey Legend Larionov

The Saginaw Spirit hosted former Detroit Red Wing great Igor Larionov at the game Wednesday night. Larionov met fans and signed copies of his DVD "Farwell to Moscow" to raise money for his Children's Hockey Foundation.

Fans Support Spirit Charitable Foundation with Live Jersey Auction

Saginaw Spirit fans raised thousands of dollars for the Saginaw Spirit Charitable Foundation, with the annual Live and Silent game-worn jersey auction. Since 2002, the Saginaw Spirit Charitable Foundation has donated more than $60,000 in cash, merchandise and tickets to non-profit organizations in and around Mid-Michigan.
