November 20, 2021 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Saginaw Spirit News Release
Owen Sound, ON - The Saginaw Spirit nearly mounted a four-goal comeback on consecutive nights, but was not meant to be Saturday night in Owen Sound as they fell to the Attack, 6-3. Buffalo Sabres prospect Josh Bloom continued his strong play with two more goals for 12 on the season. 2022 NHL Draft eligible Matyas Sapovaliv had two assists for his third multi-point game of the season. Rookie goaltender Brett Fullerton made his OHL debut and stopped 17 shots in relief of Andrew Oke.
With a four-goal comeback victory fresh on their minds, the Spirit set out to stop one of the hottest teams in the OHL Saturday night in the Owen Sound Attack, who had won five straight games coming into the matchup with the Spirit.
Like Friday night, the Spirit found themselves trailing early, as the Attack filled the net three times on six shots and held a 3-0 lead, six minutes into the game. Thomas Chafe (2), Deni Goure (8), and William Portokalis (2) scored the for the Attack. The Spirit decided to replace Andrew Oke with Brett Fullerton for his first OHL appearance at that point. Julian Fantino added on to the Attack lead before the end of the period on a goal from right in front of the net and it was 4-0 Attack after the first period.
Again, like Friday night, the Spirit would turn the tides in the second period starting with a wraparound goal by overage Dalton Duhart (4). Matyas Sapovaliv drew the only assists at 8:18. It stayed 4-1 until Josh Bloom snapped a wrist shot from the wing through a cut the deficit to 4-2 at 17:17. Just like Friday night, the Spirit trailed their opponent 4-2 going into the third period.
Tonight, would be a different story for the Spirit as Ethan Burroughs (5) stopped the Spirit momentum with a power play goal 4:22 of the third period to extend the Owen Sound lead to 5-2. William Portokalis scored his second goal of the night at 8:56 to make it a 6-2 lead for the Attack. The never-say-die Spirit continued fighting, and scored a Josh Bloom power play goal at 11:24 to cut the spread to 6-3, but was as close as the Spirit would get tonight. Corbin Votary won his first OHL game with a 25-save performance in goal for the Attack.
Saginaw takes the ice again on Wednesday, November 24 in Flint against the Firebirds in the fourth game of 12 in the Coors Light I-75 Divide Rivalry Series. The Spirit have won the first three games of the Firebirds this season.
The Spirit return to The Dow Event Center Saturday, Nov. 27 facing the Windsor Spitfires for 'Light the Night' supporting Leukemia and Lymphoma awareness.
