Lowell Spinners News Release
FISHKILL, NY - Though the New York-Penn League All-Star Break will give the Lowell Spinners a pair of days off, the way the team has been playing they would seemingly wish to keep going. The Spinners completed a three-game sweep of the McNamara Division leading Hudson Valley Renegades with a 5-2 win Sunday afternoon at Dutchess Stadium.
Lowell (26-28) got on the board quickly in the first inning. Mike Miller led off the game with a ground rule double, and the Spinners loaded the bases as Deven Marrero followed with a walk and Dreily Guerrero singled. David Chester grounded into a double play, scoring Miller, to give the Spinners a 1-0 lead.
After going down in order in the first, Hudson Valley (35-19) pulled even in the bottom half of the second inning. With one out, Luke Maile was hit by a pitch, advancing to second on a balk by Madison Younginer, coming around to score on a two-out single by Jake DePew, knotting the score at one.
The Spinners retook the lead in the top half of the fifth inning in an inning that could have been bigger. Aneury Tavarez singled up the middle to lead off the inning, advancing to second when Matt Gedman reached on a throwing error by shortstop Ryan Dunn. JT Watkins attempted to sacrifice the runners over, but the bunt was perfect and Watkins beat it out for a single to load the bases. For the second time a double play plated a run, as Miller grounded sharply to second, scoring Tavarez, but wiping out Watkins at second. Marrero followed with a single to score Gedman and stole second, but was gunned down attempting to swipe third with the Spinners ahead, 3-1.
Hudson Valley pulled closer in the sixth inning, plating a run on an RBI groundout by Justin O'Connor, cutting the Spinner lead to 3-2.
Lowell would tack on a pair of insurance runs in the top half of the eighth inning. Watkins led off the inning with a walk, advancing to second on a one-out single by Marrero. Guerrero followed with a double to right, scoring both and giving the Spinners a little breathing room that would hold as the final, 5-2.
Younginer started for the Spinners as he continues his rehab from a lat injury and works his way back to Greenville. IN three innings, Younginer allowed one run on one hit and one walk, striking out three. Yunior Ortega (1-2, 4.17) followed, allowing one run on four hits over four innings, striking out three. Braden Kapteyn picked up his fifth save with a pair of scoreless innings, striking out one.
Offensively, Tavarez again led the way, extending his on-base streak to 13-games, during which he has raised his average from .262 to .313. Marrero, Guerrero and Watkins each added two hit games as part of an 11 hit offensive attack.
Guerrero and Francisco Taveras head to Mahoning Valley, OH for the New York-Penn League All-Star Game on Tuesday while the remainder of the team head home for a well deserved two-days off. The Spinners enter the All-Star Break having won five in a row and 14 of 16, bringing the team from the worst in the NYPL to second in the Stedler Division and within striking distance of the Wild Card leading Brooklyn Cyclones. The team returns to action Wednesday at LeLacheur Park when they begin a six-game homestand with Tyler Seguin Speed Dating Night.
