State College Spikes News Release

NILES, Ohio - Enmanuel Solano produced another quality start for the State College Spikes, and Jack Ralston continued to rack up scoreless innings, but the Mahoning Valley Scrappers took a 2-1 decision on Wednesday night at Eastwood Field.

Solano (1-5) produced his third outing of six innings or more with three earned runs or less for the Spikes (19-20) this season. The right-hander limited the Scrappers (20-19) to two runs on five hits, a walk and a hit batsman while striking out six batters over 6 1/3 innings.

Ralston finished the game for State College with 1 2/3 shutout frames in which he struck out three of the five batters he faced. The UCLA product has not been charged with a run over the first 12 2/3 innings of his professional career, and has posted a 0.39 WHIP.

Bryan Lavastida brought in two runs with a bases-loaded single in the third to give the Scrappers the lead. David Vinsky then tripled and scored on Moises Castillo's fielder's choice in the sixth to cut the deficit, but the Spikes could get no closer.

Carlos Vargas (3-2) earned the win for Mahoning Valley with six innings of one-run ball. Vargas allowed three hits, two walks and a hit batsman while striking out six batters. Nick Mikolajchak (1) struck out the side in the ninth for the save.

The Spikes will look to salvage the final game of the three-game series in Niles on Thursday in a 7:05 p.m. matchup against the Scrappers at Eastwood Field. Right-hander Dalton Roach (1-0), who went six innings and gave up just one earned run for the win in his first start for State College on Friday, gets the ball to begin the 7:05 p.m. matchup.

Mahoning Valley will send right-hander Liam Jenkins (0-3) to the hill.

Following the road trip, the Spikes begin a stretch of six home games in seven days with a weekend series against the West Virginia Black Bears (Pittsburgh Pirates).
