State College Spikes News Release
ONEONTA, NY - The State College Spikes dropped the second straight game to the Oneonta Tigers Sunday night, losing 6-1 at Dameschke Field. It was the first game the Spikes have lost this season after scoring first.
The Spikes (5-14) jumped ahead in the second inning after Andy Vasquez reached base on a bunt single. Vasquez later scored on a Cole White sacrifice fly to center field. Vasquez was the only Spike to cross the plate on the night.
Oneonta (10-10) took the lead in the bottom of the second with a four-run inning of their own. The Tigers drove in their four runs on five hits, including two triples and a double.
State College was unable to regain the lead for the rest of the game. The Tigers added an additional run in both the fourth and eighth innings, ensuring their victory.
After a walk in the first inning, Matt Payne has now reached base safely in all 14 games he has played in with the Spikes. Andy Vasquez led the Spikes offense, going 2-for-4 with one run. Allen Ponder allowed no runs on three hits in his 3 2/3 innings relief outing.
Spikes' starter Ryan Kelly (0-1) took the loss, after pitching 3 1/3 innings. The right-hander allowed five runs on seven hits and struck out three.
Tigers reliever Daniel DeLucia (1-1) earned the win, giving up two hits and no runs in two innings pitched. Lester Oliveros earned his first save of the year, pitching the final three innings of the game and giving up no runs or hits with five strike outs.
The two clubs will play the final game of the series tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. Right-hander Brian Leach is set to pitch for the Spikes, and will face Oneonta's Trevor Feeney. Catch all the action on the Spikes' Radio Network, 95.3-3WZ.
The team will return home on Wednesday, July 9, when they take on the Hudson Valley Renegades. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. and the first 2,000 fans will receive a Spikes golf ball in celebration of Golf Night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
