FORT MILL, S.C. - January 10, 2008 - The Charlotte Knights and National Baseball Hall of Fame member Ozzie Smith are teaming up to help the United Way of Central Carolinas with the 1st Annual Night With the Knights. The event will be held on February 12th at the Charlotte Convention Center Ballroom.
"Our entire organization is really looking forward to this event. We get to help out the good people at the United Way and also have the pleasure of bringing in a great guest speaker in Ozzie Smith," Knights Vice President/General Manager Dan Rajkowski said. "Ozzie is a great role model for today's baseball players and a true Hall of Famer."
The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. and include a dinner, silent auction, honoring a Charlotte baseball legend and a speech from Smith. Tickets to the event will go on sale Friday at noon and are $125 per person and $1,000 a table. All net proceeds of the event will go to the United Way.
"United Way of Central Carolinas is thrilled to work closely with the Charlotte Knights and Ozzie Smith for this great event," said Jim Nash, managing director and group head of the Sports Finance and Advisory Group for Bank of America Securities, who serves as chair for the Sports and Entertainment team of volunteers for the United Way of Central Carolinas. "We look forward to bringing our country's past time to the Central Carolina community in a meaningful way that helps benefit the United Way."
Smith is widely considered one of the greatest defensive players of all time having won 13 consecutive gold gloves during his career. He earned the nickname "Wizard of Oz" due to his impressive defensive play. A 15 time all-star, Smith won the 1985 NLCS MVP and 1987 Silver Slugger Award. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2002, in his first year of eligibility.
"I'm looking forward to visiting the great city of Charlotte.," Smith said. "There has been a great history of professional baseball for over 100 years in the Charlotte area. I look forward to speaking on February 12th, where we hope to help the United Way as well as get people's mind back on baseball."
