Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Idaho Steelheads scored two power play goals in a span of 1:41 early in the third period to break a 3-3 tie and cruised to a 6-3 victory over the Anchorage Aces in front of 2,795 Saturday night at Sullivan Arena.

Idaho limited Anchorage to just four shots on goal in the first period and gained a 2-0 edge behind goals by Ben Keup and Joe Rybar. Dean Larson set up Yvan Corbin for a one-timer, his second goal of the series and 15th of the year, at 9:28 of the second period on an Aces' power play. The Steelheads pushed the lead back to 3-1 as Dan Shermerhorn connected at 13:15. But Anchorage appeared to gain some momentum when Carl Drakensjo rammed home a Kimbi Daniels rebound with 1:46 left in the middle frame.

The Aces continued to press as the third period began, finally tying the game on Kevin McNeill's first pro goal in North America, assisted by Larson and Corbin at 3:53. But Eric Landry and Corbin drew back-to-back penalties shortly thereafter, leading to power play goals by Marty Flichel and Cory Morgan that turned a 3-3 game into a 5-3 Idaho advantage in a span of three minutes. Keup's second of the game with 2:44 remaining capped a period in which the Steelheads scored three goals on just four shots against Anchorage goaltender Ryan Person.

The Aces (9-21-1) were outshot 27-17 in losing their fourth straight to open this seven-game homestand, which continues tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. with the series finale against Idaho. The Steelheads, who improved their league-best record to 22-6-3, have outscored Anchorage 51-22 in their 10 head-to-head wins this season and have won seven of their last eight games overall. All games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.anchorageaces.com or www.kfqd.com, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
