New York Liberty News Release
Saturday, June 3, 2006 has been designed for Liberty fans! To thank you for your support the past ten years, the Liberty will be throwing a special opening day celebration.
Remember 1997?... The first Harry Potter book was published... Bryant Gumbel signed off of "The Today Show" for the last time... Madeleine Albright became the first female secretary of state...The IOC picked Athens to be the host city for the 2004 Summer Olympics. And on June 21, 1997, the WNBA made its debut, with the Liberty traveling to Los Angeles to play the Sparks, a game the Liberty would go on to win for the first of seven straight victories during this inaugural season.
Ten years later, the WNBA and the New York Liberty are still going strong and on June 3, the team will take the court at Madison Square Garden for the 10th anniversary season! On this historic day, fans will have the opportunity to welcome back Liberty originals Teresa Weatherspoon, Rebecca Lobo, Sue Wicks, and Kym Hampton who will be on hand to pay tribute to the past ten years and look ahead to the future of women's professional basketball.
