Special Olympics Luncheon with the Alaska Wild Cheerleaders

The Alaska Wild Cheerleaders will have lunch with seven Special Olympics Alaska athletes on January 16, 2008 at the Special Olympics Alaska Training Center and Campus, (3200 Mountain View Drive). "We want to send a message to the community that we're one big family," said David Weatherholt President/CEO of the Alaska Wild. "I am proud to say that the bond between the Wild and the Special Olympics Alaska organization is life long." The Alaska Wild is a major supporter of Special Olympics Alaska and last season seven Special Olympics Alaska athletes were chosen to have lunch with the Alaska Wild Cheerleaders. Alaska Wild players, coaches and cheerleaders will also help during the Special Olympics Alaska 2008 competitions throughout the year. The last Alaska Wild home game of the 2008 regular season will be the "Special Olympics Alaska Night" on Thursday, June 12th.

Special Olympics Alaska is an accredited program of Special Olympics Inc., a global organization that has provided sports training and competition to people with intellectual disabilities since 1968. In Alaska, Special Olympics serve more than 1,500 athletes in 18 communities statewide through local community training programs. The Summer Games is one of four major annual Special Olympics Alaska events held throughout the year. Other events include a Fall Tournament (golf and bocce) in September, a Bowling Tournament in November and the Winter Games (alpine skiing, cross country skiing, figure skating, floor hockey, snow boarding, snow shoeing and speed skating) in March. The Alaska Wild is part of the Intense Football League (IFL). Founded in 2003, the IFL consists of a record nine professional indoor football teams, three of which are located outside of Texas, the Louisiana Swashbucklers of Lake Charles, the Alaska Wild of Anchorage, Alaska and the Fairbanks Grizzlies of Fairbanks, Alaska. Texas teams include the CenTex Barracudas of Belton, Corpus Christi Hammerheads, Odessa Roughnecks, San Angelo Stampede Express, Katy Ruff Riders, and Frisco Thunder.
