Sox rally falls just short in loss to SteepleCats

Valley Blue Sox News Release

HOLYOKE, MA-The Holyoke Blue Sox were a hit away from erasing a five-run deficit but could not get the one last hit as they fell 5-4 to the North Adams SteepleCats at MacKenzie Stadium in front of 1,183 fans in a clash of West Division rivals.

All of the SteepleCats runs came in a second inning rally that saw more walks than hits as left fielder Dominic Severino brought in the first run on a sacrifice fly, catcher Jacob Huckabay singled in a run, shortstop Jose Cuas and first baseman Brad Anderson both walked with the bases loaded, and finally second baseman Daniel Bick came home on a wild pitch.

Holyoke started their comeback trail in the sixth, with catcher Spencer Brann ripping a double to the gap in right, then stealing third and coming home on a wild pitch. Then, in the ninth, the team sparked a rally, as second baseman Jason Lombardozzi doubled to right and shortstop Matt Reida singled to left, bringing Lombardozzi to third.

Attempting to pick off Reida at first, SteepleCats closer Anthony Mannuccia threw the ball into his dugout, allowing Reida to take second and Lombardozzi to score. Third baseman Brendan Hendriks singled Reida in, and then first baseman Joel Fisher doubled to the left field wall to plate Hendriks. That brought up designated hitter Justin Morhardt, but after a lengthy at-bat, Mannuccia fanned Morhardt to end the threat and the game.

The Blue Sox are next at home for an exhibition game on Monday against the USA Military All-Stars, scheduled to start at 6:35 PM at Mackenzie Stadium. All military members may attend for free with a valid military ID.
