Great Falls, MT - Tonight the Great Falls White Sox were defeated by the Helena Brewers 6-5 at Centene Stadium. Ryan Rote (0-1) took the loss as he worked only 1 inning, allowing a lone ninth inning run. The win went to David Welch (1-0) for the Brewers as he worked two innings, blowing a save opportunity but picking up a victory.
The Brewers scored first tonight in the first inning, when Ryan Braun singled home Charlie Fermaint. In the third, Helena scored twice more. Angel Salome singled home Kenny Holmberg before Braun had a sacrifice fly bringing home Fermaint once again.
Up 3-0 in the fifth, Helena increased the lead when Darren Ford came home during a rundown at second base. Another run scored in the eighth when Fermaint singled home Ford to put the Brewers up 5-0.
The Sox would finally get on the board in the seventh when Daron Roberts tripled off the center field wall. He scored when Matt Tribble hit a fly ball to center that Fermaint dropped.
In the eighth, the Sox would send nine men to the plate to tie the game. Francisco Hernandez, Brandon Allen, and Daron Roberts all had RBI hits before Manny Rodriguez came up as a pinch hitter and tied the game on a sac fly.
The Brewers would then retake the lead on a two out, two strike hit in the ninth by Salome to put the Brewers up 6-5. They would set aside the Sox in the bottom of the ninth in order to pick up the win.
Tomorrow night the Sox will play the final game of this six game home stand and the third of three against the Helena Brewers. The starters for the game are: Carlos Torres (RHP) for Great Falls and Steve Hammond (LHP) for Helena. Game time is at 7:00pm and can be heard on 560AM-KMON starting at 6:45.
