Mississippi RiverKings News Release
Southaven charities and city government are taking to heart the saying "United, we stand," as they prepare for a large-scale fundraising effort, "Southaven Scores With the RiverKings" during the Mississippi RiverKings hockey team's Tuesday, April 21st playoff game.
"Our charities will receive $10 of every $18 ticket we sell to the April 21st game," Southaven Mayor Greg Davis said. "That would really make a difference in some of these organizations' budgets. Just think of all the good we can do with $20,000 - that's just 2,000 tickets, a fraction of the seats in the DeSoto Civic Center.
"Plus, the RiverKings are the hometown team, and they are finally back in the Playoffs race this year, so we're really excited to support them. It's affordable pro sports and family-friendly entertainment.
"We can help local charities and support the team," Davis said. "It's a win-win situation."
The RiverKings are donating $5 of the total $10, while the Maddox Foundation has agreed to donate an additional $5 for every ticket sold.
"The Foundation has long believed that the RiverKings are one of the community's greatest assets, and we know that area nonprofits in our community can benefit greatly from partnering with the team," Maddox Foundation Director of Programs Mike Ward said. "The organizations who have chosen to participate in ticket fundraising programs with the RiverKings help the Foundation achieve our mission. That is one reason we decided to partner with Southaven and match the charities' earnings in this fundraiser.
"The RiverKings M.V.P. program (Money-Volunteers-Publicity) is a great fund-raising program for any nonprofit - instead of selling things like candy or magazines that people may not want or need, the nonprofit sells tickets to RiverKings games, which is one of the best values in family entertainment in the region. The nonprofit, its volunteers, and its supporters can have a fun night out and raise significant funds for their work.
"The Maddox Foundation, like everyone else, is having to deal with the realities of today's economy, and our funds available for local grants are limited. We will continue to work first with those organizations who work with us and our primary community programs such as the RiverKings and the M.V.P. program."
The Mississippi RiverKings are supported by their community partners, season ticket holders, fans, and by program-related investments of Maddox Foundation, an independent private foundation based in Hernando, Miss., to lessen the burden of the Desoto County government by increasing the viability of the Desoto Civic Center and promoting the long-term economic development of the community. The Foundation now uses the team in a variety of programs that increase investments in area charities and their causes.
