(Loveland, CO) --- Konrad Reeder's goal 6:43 into the overtime period finished a late comeback by the Colorado Eagles, as they edged the Mississippi RiverKings 3-2 in the first game of the Northern Conference finals in Loveland. The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven series between the two conference rivals.
Mississippi opened the scoring, as Bobby Chaumont gave the RiverKings a lead in the first period, blistering a shot from the left side for his fifth goal of the playoffs. Chaumont's goal was assisted by Andrew Lackner and Derek Landmesser at 12:18 and was Chaumont's first power play goal, as Mississippi held the one-goal lead at the first intermission.
Martin Gascon added to the lead in the second period, rifling a shot from the slot off a pass from Garrett Larson for a 2-0 RiverKings advantage. Joe Markusen was also given an assist on the goal.
However, Colorado rallied with a pair of goals late in the third period, both from Ryan Tobler. The first one came at 15:20 and the tying goal came with 1:45 remaining in regulation to send it into overtime.
Konrad Reeder tipped a loose puck into the net after a driving effort from Ed McGrane left the puck loose near the Mississippi crease.
Mississippi held the offensive edge with 45 shots on goal to Colorado's 38. The RiverKings had 20 shots alone in the second period, but Colorado put 18 shots on net in the final frame to help force the overtime period.
The RiverKings scored one of their two goals on the power play in nine chances, while the Eagles had only one power play chance and failed to score on it.
Game two of the best-of-seven series will be played in Colorado on Friday night, starting at 8:05 PM Central time. Games three and four will be back in Mississippi on Tuesday, April 23rd and Thursday, April 24th, both nights starting at 7:05 PM in the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven.
