Nashville Sounds News Release
NASHVILLE -- The Nashville Sounds won their season-best fourth straight game on Sunday afternoon at Greer Stadium, crushing the first-place Oklahoma RedHawks by a 9-2 count to pull within 1 ½ games of the PCL Eastern Division lead.
Oklahoma jumped ahead 2-0 with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first inning against Sounds starter Dave Williams. With one out, Ramon Nivar reached base and advanced to second on a fielding error by second baseman Terry Shumpert. Jason Conti drove an RBI single through the right side to plate Nivar with the game's first run. Gary Matthews, Jr. doubled and Manny Alexander singled to load the bases for Danny Ardoin, who plated Conti with a sacrifice fly to center to make it 2-0.
The Sounds halved the lead in the bottom of the second on Tony Alvarez's two-out RBI double that scored Carlos Rivera. Centerfielder Luke Allen tied the scored with a one-out solo homer off reliever Rosman Garcia in the fifth. The blast, which landed on the Watson's hot tub deck, was his fifth of the year and extended Nashville's streak of games with at least one home run to 13 in a row.
Nashville jumped ahead 6-2 in the home half of the seventh on a pair of two-run doubles against a pair of RedHawks relievers. Shumpert's one-out, two-run double to left-center off Garcia, his fourth two-bagger in the last three games, broke the 2-2 tie and extended the veteran infielder's season-high hitting streak to five games. Chris Truby added a two-out, two-RBI double later in the frame.
The Sounds tacked on three more runs in the eighth against RedHawks reliever Erick Burke. Alvarez walked and scored on an RBI single by Figueroa, who finished 3-for-4 in the contest. After Allen and Shumpert drew walks to load the bases, Daryle Ward ripped a two-run double to center.
Reliever Mike Gonzalez (2-0) picked up the victory with a scoreless inning of relief that included 10 pitches and a pair of strikeouts. Garcia (0-2) took the loss after allowing four runs over his 2 1/3 innings.
Williams turned in a solid outing for the Sounds in his no-decision, allowing only two unearned runs and fanning five over 6 1/3 innings.
The Sounds and RedHawks play game three of the four-game set at 7 p.m. on Monday evening at Greer Stadium.
It will be a matchup of highly-regarded prospects, as Nashville right-hander John VanBenschoten (0-1), the Pittsburgh Pirates' top prospect, will square off against Oklahoma right-hander Juan Dominguez (0-2), the Texas Rangers' #4 prospect.
